N00b seeks CNC help Friday 4/4/2025 (tomorrow)

I have a slot booked for tomorrow at 2PM, but I plan to be there all day leading up to my appointment since it will be my first project, and I have to convert a design I made with laser in mind into something usable in Vcarve. I’m not new to vectors or CAD, but I’m a beginner at this particular program.

I could use some help with my toolpaths (maybe/probably)

I’m confident I can get my job set up on my own, (Thanks to @SteveW and his BOOP!) but if someone is there just hanging out I’d appreciate a maker with more experience watching me set up so I don’t do anything dumb.

Stoked to finally join the CNC club!

What are you trying to make on the CNC Dan?

Dan, I’ll be there around noon, and I have Small CNC time from 1-4.

@bwatt I’m making a table that was originally designed to be laser cut, so I am finishing a last minute revision. I’ll be on one of the public computers until 2

@DanHawn, It was fun working together on your project. I’d be happy to do it again. @bwatt

Thanks so much for your guidance and generosity of your time Brian!

It felt like a demonstration of Murphy’s Law with all my issues, but I definitely learned more than if everything had gone smoothly!

As discussed in class, you always learn more from your mistakes. That is why I always encourage students to come back in the weeks after class to cut simple shapes with cheap bits to start making those mistakes and learn!

As I mentioned at the CNC SIG, you might consider the VCarve Dogbone Gadget which includes a video: Automatic Dogbone Gadget | Vectric Gadgets describing how to use it.

@DanHawn If you want to, tell me the next time you’ll be in the shop working on the CNC and I’ll see if I can make it. @bwatt
