Metal Shop Expansion: Next Steps

Hello all, I think everything came together for the Ceramics Grand Opening very well. I was impressed with the turnout; kudos to the social media and promotions people for making that happen. And of course many thanks to all the people who have volunteered in building the expansion.

But we’ve run a lot of people ragged to meet our goal. Many of us need a bit of a break. I’ve been told by the leadership that the metal shop move does not need to be rushed, and I intend to act accordingly. That said, I’m as tired of the wood dust and dust collector noise as everyone else in the metal shop is, so I don’t I tend to dawdle unnecessarily either.

The infrastructure of the new metal shop is half to two-thirds done. Finishing that is the first priority. I have a variety of tasks for any volunteers that want to help with that and will have more over time.

In addition to the basic infrastructure, I have a number of things to build for the new space: workbenches, shelves and racks, and ultimately even the new Laser Welder enclosure. A couple of designs are already finished on SketchUp, and I have wood available to build them, so I can get anyone who is familiar with SketchUp and would like to work on that started as well. More designs and more wood and metal are on the way.

So come by the new metal shop space if you want to help out and I’ll be happy to put you to work!*

*I’m teaching Tuesday and Wednesday nights, but I’ll try to have people in the loop available for work to continue then as well.

Thanks to those who have helped out already. I will be taking tomorrow off, or at least away from the physical space, as a necessary sanity safeguard. But I will be here Friday night and on Saturday and Sunday if anyone wants to help with the next steps in the metal shop.
