Metal Shop Deburring Wheels: Not Grinders

I first noticed this back on August 1st: someone had worn off big sections of both deburring wheels, doing so asymmetrically, turning them slightly wedge shaped.

I meant to post about it but forgot, but I would have figured it was a one-off event anyway. I replaced the wheel by the mill, which was worn down to half its original size after a year of use.

But now I see that that new deburring wheel has already been worn down several inches in just six weeks.

Someone has been using the deburring wheels for heavy material removal, which is absolutely not their purpose. As their name suggests (and they are labeled by a sign on the machines), they are for removing burrs and rounding sharp corners. Light material removal on aluminum is tolerable, but any heavier material removal should be done on the belt sander.

These wheels are relatively expensive but can last years. But we are suddenly wearing them out vastly faster.
