Im wondering if I would be able to do long boring on wood with the metal lathe. Thanks!
Sorry we don’t allow wood on the metal lathe. The dust can long term effect the metal lathe.
Thank you!
We do have wood turning lathes…can you use these to bore your hole?
The only way I’ve seen it done at the size holes I need are on a metal lathe. I believe I’ve found a solution and I’ve purchased everything for it. Once I’ve got it figured out I’ll reach out about maybe bringing it into the space!
I actually recently wrote a full policy on wood in the metal shop but hadn’t posted it yet. I did this after an experiment on controlling wood dust on the metal lathe. That turns out to be a complete no-go; the dust from turning wood cannot be kept from settling on oiled and precision surfaces. An hour of wood turning required an hour and a half of cleanup and re-oiling by a conscientious expert (me). I will never attempt it again and cannot permit it. If I ever needed more wood turning precision and control, I would spend my time to make an add-on for the wood lathes.
I completely understand the issue with the maintenance. I just wanted to double check before i spent the money on the system that im building for long bore applications. I cant wait to connect in the shop and run some ideas by you and maybe we can find a good solution for future projects. I have a specific niche (Native American flutes) so it’s a bit of a specialized tool for that application. It’s been something I’ve been trying to rectify for a few years now and i think I’ve got it figured out. The tools should be here within the next week or so. I appreciate your quick response and explanation as to why that cannot be an option. Thank you so much for your time.
