Maker Shots: Studio Photography Day

Makers!

We’re excited to roll out a new event - Maker Shots: Studio Photography Day

This members-only session, hosted by @JCicolani and myself, is all about helping you capture great photos and videos of your projects. We’ll have the backdrop, lights, and gear ready to go. We’ll touch on a few basic photography tips along the way, but the main goal is simple: get your work looking its best.

Date: Sunday, 08/31
Time: 12 PM to 6 PM
Where: Asmbly MPR

Timing will depend on the size and number of projects you bring, and since this is our first time running it, expect a little bit of experimenting along the way. We’ve set up six 1-hour slots for members to sign up. Realistically, most folks won’t need the full hour, so if the slots fill up, don’t worry, come hang out anyway. There’s a good chance we can fit in a few extras.

Volunteers: we could use a few extra hands during the event, if you’re available, we’d love your help! No prior experience needed, come whenever.

See you there!

This is so cool!! Let me know if there’s anything you need from me to support.

I hope this goes well and we can offer more of these. Not only for our members but I wouldn’t mind getting a few snaps of some of my work at some point

Super neat! I don’t have time that particular afternoon, but would love to help volunteer with repeats of this kind of event. I’ve got some experience with studio lighting, photography, and project documentation. LMK if there’s any plans for a round two!

Thanks Matthew! We would very much welcome your help, maybe you can even help host them in the future. We’ll see how this one goes and I’d love to do more of these in the future, let’s chat then!

Also, thanks for the reminder that we need volunteers, updated my original post.

Besides photographing the projects individually, can we also do full-body shots of me holding each project against a backdrop?

Of course!

What a fantastic idea! If I were in town, I would be there. At the moment I am continuing to hide from the Texas heat. Hopefully, this can be a recurring event. If so, I will be happy to volunteer to help with set up tear down etc, in the future.

19 hours round trip. I will take a raincheck. It was 59 degrees inside the house at 8:30 AM.

Wow, that filled up fast! We’ll definitely be doing more of these, but we can’t do it without your help. Reach out if you’d like to help organize or run the next one!

We are planning some props for the shoot, but I thought I’d ask the community here too, if you have any of these items in pristine condition to donate, please drop them off by the lost and found shelf next to the resin 3D printers in MPR by Wednesday(or bring them on the day).

Some examples here:

  • Tiles (24”x24”)
  • Mirrors
  • White foam boards
  • Acrylic sheets
  • Dry wood
  • Small plants
  • Blankets
  • Leather
  • Fur/feather
  • Pedestal
  • Infant
  • LED string light
  • Lazy Susan
  • Anything that enhances the visual appeal without drawing too much attention away from the subject.

Uh… infant???

We can’t have children in the lost and found. Especially over night
