Maker’s mark, splash guard tool holder and trimming spinner - Part Two

The journey continues on my support of my dear daughter and her ceramics journey. Designs are really never done so after using the designs in my previous post she suggested I make changes and we extended to other ceramic tools as follows:

  • Tool Holders: Previously I made a one-piece tool holder from an internet file that fits over the curved splash guard.

    • Next she wanted a set of holes and a set of slots. The holes for needle tools, loop tools & wire cutter that have cylindrical handles and slots for sponges and ribs. To make it easier I separated the splash guard side and the tool holders. This allows her to take them apart and use them separately.
    • I even created a joinery piece to attach two holders together.
    • Over time we have continued to update the slots & holes from separate holders into a combined one. This one is so new she has not tried it yet.
  • Maker’s Mark Supports: She found that when using her maker’s mark that she needed support to press against.

  • Alphabet Letters: She saw someone using a set of letters to mark their pieces and press-in phrases onto their work.

    • Interacting with ChatGPT I created an OpenSCAD file to create a single character cube with a “Courier” letter extruded on one end and intruded on the other (to label it). From there I asked ChatGPT to create a 6 x 6 matrix of A-Z characters as output. Running the OpenSCAD program produced an STL file that I 3D-printed. Separately I used ChatGPT to create a matrix box & top to hold the letters. Note: Remember to mirror the extruded letters. Later I created lowercase a-z, 0-9, and special characters, and second box.
    • She told me she really liked the letters, but the box was hard to open and close. So I found a FreeCAD parametric box on the internet, adjusted its size and inserted a 12 x 6 matrix of holes. Although she hasn’t received it yet she thinks it is a much better design with the hinge and latch.
  • Roller and Misc: Taking a tour of the internet I found some interesting ceramic tools. So I downloaded some, I purchased others, and printed them. This included some loop tools, curved ribs, and some rollers.

I think she’s been happy with them and we shall see which ones she actually uses. People at her studio in Las Vegas have remarked about all her tools and that her Dad is helping her.
