I broke a part on my sewing machine. The company is not making it anymore. I believe that it could be made. Its quite small. Maybe some can tool it for me or can be casted. Must be a metal that its strong and can withstand the pressure. I have the broken part and can send pictures if anyone wants to see it I tried to use metal welding/glue and that didnt work, it cracked again.
I don’t have the skills to make that, but I found what looks like the right part online. A bit expensive, but cheaper than a new machine and probably cheaper than what a good machinist would charge you too US-34353A | Union-Special Diff. Feed Dog Holder – Marfar Australia
I presume those are AUD, so it’s only USD $27. But the postage might be unreasonable.
Are you sure it needs to be metal? Some plastics are pretty strong. Even if they wore out faster, it would be easy to print a 3D bunch of those in plastic. But if it’s a giant hassle to replace it when it breaks, it might not be feasible.
Actually it’s USD, it’s $67 AUD. But yes, shipping may add up, if they even offer international shipping. Still, like @jimbojsb said the price is probably more reasonable than fair market value for someone to make it. I’m no machinist, but assuming all of the features are necessary, it looks like a pretty difficult part to make, and to make a one off would probably take several hours.
It’s worth trying to 3D print it, worst case it breaks again…there are some nice carbon fiber reinforced filaments that are pretty strong, but if you broke the metal one, then perhaps it does need to 3D print.
Most commercial sewing machines are knocked off by a few manufacturers across the world (ie our Juki is a knock off of a Singer design and I believe even uses the same manual).
Looks like “Kansai special” is the Union Special knockoff
Likely your cheapest option will be these guys since they appear to already have the design ready to go. Fun times getting things into the US from China right now though.
