I’m interested in laser cutting leather on one of the big lasers. My leather is veg tanned and is about 5oz (~2mm) thick. Does anyone have any tips, tricks or lessons learned from lasering leather?
I’m still identifying the details of my project, however the thought is to cut out shapes in different colored veg tanned leather, and glue them to a backing piece to form a geometric pattern/scene (2 layers total). So, it’s important to figure out how to get the kerf right so the pieces align properly, which I will then hand stitch.
@JOSEGAYTAN - you seem to have good insight on lasers in regards getting the power just right so that char is minimal. I was wondering if you’ve done leather before?
No leather, done leatherette and is not always the same settings. Ill look it up tomorrow if you want them. The only thing i do know is that you can dunk the leather into water and it cleans off or if youre dyeing the leather the process usualky cleans off the charred edges. Some people say that youre not supposed to engrave chrome leather only vegan tan. But there are a lot of Youtube videos that dont mention this fact. There are a few plans in my near future to make some Xmas presents using and engraving leather. When i do ill pass the information.
