Laser welder class help ( CAD design work)

Hello,

we are ready to teach the laser welder class, but we need a little help with making a design for something that students will be welding up in the class.

We thought of a birdhouse or a tea lantern because there is a nice butt weld we can do with the welding magnets at the 45degree angles. Truth is we don’t really care what it is as long as it showcases some welding techniques. (But why not be something fun people will want to take home and display)

we are looking to cut the blanks this week and start the classes ASAP. I already have material

Material is 16 gauge CR steel so .0598inches thick. We want to limit the supplies for each to a 12"x12" square

Please drop any questions below, and let me know if anyone is willing to knock this out.

I am back in town and interested. I have a couple of ideas. What is the practical limit on the number of welds/inches of weld per piece? And the number of separate set ups on the welding machine?

In making a house shape the time will be in cutting the piece that fits into the 45 on each side. It will be easier to cut 2 pieces of bar, each at half the total width of the piece, with opposite facing angles and then butt welding them together. Much easier to sketch talk in person. I am available all this week and next.

an old classic is a dice cube.

The blanks will be all pre-cut on joe’s or Asmbly’s fiber laser cutter. Since there is little warpage with the laser welder you can weld quite a bit on these pieces before things get weird. number of setups best judgement on how much 3 -4 people can do in a couple hr class

So main deliverable needed is A dxf file in Millimeters with whatever you come up with

I’m way overloaded with work stuff this week so whatever you can come up with Im happy with

I haven’t worked with CAD in about 20 years so I will bow out. I am around if someone with CAD experience wants to talk ideas.

I have started on making a dice cube in Onshape.
