Laser Cutting is Alive and Well in New Zealand!

I’ve been in New Zealand for the past couple weeks for my honeymoon, and I’ve seen a disproportionate number of laser cut and engraved items! I’m cataloguing them here, in case anyone is looking for inspiration.

One of the most interesting was this light:

It’s hard to tell, but you can see a bit in the light peeking through the wood. The parts of the shade are laser cut as long flex hinges, which makes them curve around the vertical axis.

These pieces we found in an art museum, which appears to be planes of laser cut wood and acrylic stuck together to create a statue:

In a similar vein, we saw these layered pieces in a few gift shops:

And these topological maps

And even some kits to be assembled

These journals with engraved wood covers are an idea I haven’t seen before:

There were also lots of familiar looking boxes, including this one with a wavy flex hinge:

And lots and lots of coasters:

And finally, of course, display stands:

Congrats on your nuptials and honeymoon, and thank you for sharing these! New Zealand is high on my travel list and just might have to be my 40th bday trip in a few years. These are all so cool and the abalone ones have me wondering if that is a material that can be laser cut

Thanks! NZ is beautiful and super easy to travel. Let me know if you are looking for tips!

Some brief searching on the abalone reveals that it should be cuttable. Though there is one reddit thread where a user says their laser was reflected back into the machine, which sounds not good. You can buy thin sheets of veneer with adhesive back though, so assuming we have the right laser to cut it and not reflect it should work! Some people online are also warning about the heat causing the edges to shatter or just need some cleanup.

Danny and I both have done some Abalone in Tarkin!

it works well. The hardest part is finding abalone veneer that hasn’t been cut to make it flexible.
