Laguna lathe making pinging noise

Turned one piece just fine, after chucking my second blank went to turn it on and it made a pinging noise. @jamesfreeman its the same noise it made when you and Charles were moving it to its new location, but I didn’t remember what you did to fix it and I don’t want to make it worse by turning knobs I don’t know.

As an aside @wynd I don’t remember how to remove the screw-on four jaw chuck, and the internet suggested whacking it with a hammer which didn’t sound right….

Leaving as-is for tonight, can come back tomorrow or Wednesday evening if someone knowledgeable will be around.

IIRC the indexing knob was loose, which caused the noise. I’ll be at Asmbly tomorrow and will take a look.

Don’t hit the chuck with a hammer. If it’s stuck, an easy way to loosen it is to clamp a long board between the jaws and use leverage to turn it loose.

Thank you! Do you know around what time you’ll be in?

I wasn’t able to make it in today. I plan on going tomorrow, although I’m not sure what time yet.

Lathe issue is resolved. The indexing pin had either been moved or came loose. If it happens again, loosen the two small knobs and the large knob. Slide the indexing plate down to the bottom and slightly to the left so that pin clears the spindle (rotate the spindle by hand with the power off). Then tighten the two small knobs but leave the large knob loose so that the spindle can turn freely.

Thank you! I’ll take a close look at the mechanism next time I come in to use it, so I understand what you’re suggesting here. Appreciate the detailed instructions.
