June CNC SIG Recap - 6/1

All,

Here’s the recap of the June 1st CNC Special Interest Group (SIG) Event.

  • @bwatt made some children’s blocks. For the dark piece he put mineral oil on it to finish it so it’s food safe. However, Brian said he’s going to wait to give the blocks to his grandson when he’s 21. So, do what you want with that.
  • It takes about a 2 hour time run to do all the tool change for the non-brown blocks.
  • Brian recommended using a google drive to share our design files.
  • @SteveW said Copilot is getting much better to where you can start to have it create vector files you can download directly into vCarve. It’s something to experiment more with for sure. He also shared with us some pool cube holders he’s been commissioned to sell. Funnily enough, he doesn’t actually want to sell them, but he finds himself somehow roped in! Well, good luck @SteveW !

  • @jamesfreeman talked about some of the Vectric updates such as being able to set the degrees on fillets and pseudo-dynamic range updates for determining the length of different dimensions. More information is at the Vectric website: What's new in VCarve〡Vectric

  • Make sure you log into Vectric when saving a file at your home. If you save a vCarve file at your house & don’t log in, you won’t be able to open the file at Asmbly. Make sure to log in.

  • @sneezix shared with us his AMAZING 8-month long journey building out the cheeseboard. This involved using resin, having it not dry (likely because of a mismatch on the harder vs. resin or not allowing enough mixing time), trying to inlay, and then finally trying resin again, while allowing for a longer mixing time before pouring. Check it out!

  • @TravisGood shared with us how you can build 3 free design files on studio.shapertools.com if you want to use the Shaper Origin. The Shaper Origin has a new Bench Pilot set up where it acts as a simple CNC machine with a 8" x 11" cut capability. Bench Pilot information is shown here: Shaper BenchPilot.

  • @Kasper shared with us his sun blocking ultra-pink whale rib-cage-looking masterpiece!

  • Steve Knodl shared with us a new Storage Tracking approach he shared with us. This enables you to more easily track storage you leave at Asmbly as opposed to having to manually write out all this information on a piece of paper when you want to store items at Asmbly.

Hope to see everyone at next month’s CNC SIG July 6, 2025 meeting @ 12:30pm at Asmbly!

Check back later for the Zoom link of the recorded meeting–it’s still being downloaded to the cloud.

Steve asked what I used to finish my cheeseboard. I used Bumbleshoots Hydratic Wood Serum, followed by their All-In-One Wood Conditioner.
