Is Glaze Temperature Data Available?

Hello!
Is there a guide on what the glaze temperatures are given the new shelf designation?
Armadillo Clay lists low fire glazes between Cone 04-06, and midfire as Cone 05-06.
Is information available about the temperature programs used in the kilns during glaze firing?
I know we have pyrometric cones but I would like to know if the thermostats can broadcast data digitally and if we are recording the information. The kilns look high tech enough that they may allow access to that data. If so…and this isnt being extracted, do you need help exporting this data? :grimacing:

Hello, Crystal,

Yes, we have access to this data, and we are collecting it, but this is the realm of our fire experts, so I’ll defer to them to give you an exact answer.

@SethWhite

We typically fire our glaze at cone 5, approximately 2160∘𝐹. We also do cone 04 which runs from 1915-1971∘𝐹. We can do cone 10 (2350∘𝐹) if we can fill the kiln.

And we do babysit our kilns on our phones by remote. We kept a log until we had our temps adjusted. I do have a glaze journal that I keep on Slack that is available to everyone on slack. Have not brought it to Discourse yet, but that will probably later this week after the glaze syllabus and SOP.

It seems like a lot more is going on in Slack but Slack is intended for volunteers. I hear about this often and tbh as a member and non volunteer I would appreciate being more in the know. I will volunteer if it grants me access to more information and learnings.
Given that there is an app/babysit the kilns remotely, this seems ideal for setting up an automated system using the kiln’s API. I assume there is one, otherwise you’ wouldnt be able to do what you’re describing. I am happy to help with this. If there is bluetooth, we can broadcast the data to a phone or to an arduino/raspberry pi, and upload the data using the API. I do this kind of thing for money on a daily basis. It would prevent the legwork of having to “bring things from slack to discourse” because it would be automagical.

I am willing to bet that you will get better engagement/rule following from members if they are empowered to correlate their glaze results with more information about the firing. I know that is true for myself, as I am growing weary of my own somewhat blind experimenting.

@cnassouri

There are a number of priorities and only so many people available to do them. While we would love to make everything available in every format that folks want, that adds to the to-do list, so we try our best with what we have. The apps in question for Kiln monitoring have more advanced features, but last we checked we’re behind a paywall that we are not paying for. All of the logs were kept manually.

You seem very enthusiastic about this topic. If you’d be willing to volunteer and help make some formal dashboards, we should talk.

Staff, leads, and stewards chat about things in slack for more real-time communication and problem solving. It is also often used to prove out things that would make sense for broadcasting on discourse or otherwise made public. If we could invite everybody to slack we would, however, that’s another thing that adds to a cost for us. We welcome anyone that will be able to help us out in some way.

More than happy to help. I will fill out the volunteer form and include this interest. Thanks for the replies

Hi, I applied to be a volunteer so hopefully I can help here.

In the meantime could any of the kiln data be posted or moved from slack to here? I still am interested in viewing it

I post in the glaze journal here and on Slack every Monday Wednesday and Friday. Cone 5 Medium speed unless posted otherwise. Cone 5 is consistently 2118∘𝐹2167 to 2167∘𝐹. You are free to collect data in person Monday Wednesday and Friday if you need something more specific.

Can you please link me? Again I’m not in the slack channel. I feel like I am working way too hard for this info and I’m hounding you unnecessarily. I have no idea how I would be able to come collect this myself in the position I am in. Asking you to please throw me a bone here.

Hi @cnassouri. I emailed you when you applied to be a volunteer so we could set up an onboarding, but you did not respond. I have one scheduled for today @ 430PM that you are welcome to attend. Details are in the email, as well as a way to schedule another time if today isn’t possible. I’ll reply to it so it’s at the top of your inbox.
