Hi Asmbly! In an effort to give our members more agency and confidence within the shop, we’re rolling out volunteer days where you can learn about cleaning and maintaining equipment and get to know your shop leads better. First up is lasers!
Volunteer Day: LasersFirst Thursday of the Month5–8 PM
Join the Laser Shop Lead @NickE to clean and maintain the laser space! Learn how to keep it running smoothly while connecting with the volunteer team. A great way to give back and see what it takes to run a makerspace with 450+ members. Open to all—just show up!
We hope this will be a great way for members to get involved in Asmbly’s upkeep while welcoming those new to lasers, volunteering, or the community as a whole. While the focus is on cleaning and maintenance, it’s also a chance to connect, ask questions, and learn best practices from the Laser Shop Lead.
Up next on the Volunteer Days docket is Electronics! @JohnWickham is bringing back office hours on the second Saturday of the month from 12 – 2 PM. Come hang out and get pointers on a new project, troubleshoot a repair, or check out the lab for the very first time.
Reminder that Electronics Office Hours will be today from 12-2! Come get help with your project, learn about how you can incorporate the electronics space into your ideas, and talk with @JohnWickham about volunteer opportunities within the shop space!
And while I’m here, remember to take advantage of the woodshop steward on duty program! Every saturday from 3-5, there’s a volunteer in the space there to help with projects and equipment questions. Today it’s @keithwiggans!
We are launching maintenance days for the 3D printer space every third Saturday of the month from 11:30am - 2:30pm. Our first maintenance day will be Saturday, March 15th.
Help keep our printers running smoothly and earn some volunteer hours! Whether you’re a seasoned expert or just curious about how the machines work, we would love to have your assistance.
We’re expanding our Volunteer Days, giving you more chances to get involved, learn new skills, and help maintain our shops!
Starting in April:
Volunteer: Wood Turning – Every 2nd Sunday, 1:30-3:30 PM
Join shop lead @drew.hynes to help maintain the woodturning area and keep things sharp. It’s also a great time to learn more about the craft!
Starting in May:
Volunteer: Ceramics – Every 1st Tuesday, 6:00-8:00 PM (Led by @Laurel) Volunteer: Metal Shop – Every 4th Saturday, 12:30-2:30 PM (Led by @SavHarvey)
We’re close to rounding out our volunteer calendar! You do not need to have taken a class to help out—just show up and lend a hand. Many hands make quick work, and all are welcome! If you’re curious about one of these shops, this is a great opportunity to learn about troubleshooting, maintenance, and getting more involved in the community.
