If I had a CAD file

Hello CAD folks,

There is a workbench tabletop that I would like to make out of 1" MDF (3’x5’). I have the opportunity to purchase a CAD file (for the layout for the “bench dog” holes).

Additionally, I have no idea how the Laguna CNC (or any other CNC for that matter) works.

If I purchase a CAD file, is that a valid format (or would I need to convert to another format)

Also, would the class be necessary, and if yes, would it be sufficient knowing I already have the file.

Thanks, ss

@SteveStrohmer can you include the link to the workbench tabletop that you’re interested in creating.

CAD Phase: How our CNC typically works is by using VCarve program where you layout your design. For example, you specify where to put the circles for the holes for the bench dogs and their diameters. Next you select these holes, select you want to create a “pocket” and you select a tool. For example, a 1/4" end mill. This will generate a toolpath to cut out the holes. This toolpath is in a language called GCODE. Finally you save the toolpath GCODE as a file onto a USB drive which you then bring to the CNC to run. All the preceding can be done on a computer in the Textile area. CAM Phase: On the CNC you hold down your material to cut, chuck the 1/4" endmill tool, and run the toolpath GCODE to physically create your design in MDF.

Morning Brian and thanks for the quick reply. I have not purchased the CAD file yet (as I don’t know if it will be useful, although it seems like it should be) but here is a link to the description if that helps. If you need the CAD file itself and you think there is a high probability it can be used I am happy to purchase the file. Let me know if the link is helpful.

Thanks, ss

@SteveStrohmer only as a suggestion… I would take the big CNC class first if you haven’t and hold off buying anything until you do. The design file looks quite straight forward and I think you could probably do something in VCarve on your own, but buying it would indeed save you time and effort. Also I wonder what format their design file is written in, that is, what tool is required to read the design file.

@SteveStrohmer P.S. I enjoy working with other Asmbly members on a project of their choosing to help them through the process at no cost. So if you are interested, we could meet at Asmbly and work towards getting this created. But it’s up to you, and you gotta take the CNC class first. Bottom line… You learn something, I learn something, win-win.

@SteveStrohmer P.P.S. OK, this is the last comment I promise. The CNC Special Interest Group, SIG, is meeting tomorrow at 9 AM. It’s a friendly group of people and typically we show each other what we’ve been doing AKA show-and-tell. You’re welcome to attend, and I’ll be there.

Brian,

Thanks for the replies. I will take the class and figure out next steps. The file is only $18 bucks and my real goal is to start using hand tools in my garage, hence the shortcut to a workbench top!! (It is a pretty well thought out design by some folks who use it on a daily basis in the home remodeling business)

Once I take the class I will reach out.

I did see that the group meets tomorrow morning and seems ideal, but I can’t make it.

The next class is not for a couple of weeks so perhaps the next group meeting will be soon after I finish the class.

Best, ss
