How to reserve pressure pot?

There is a pressure pot next to the big lathe with a laminated sheet containing instructions on how to use it. How would one reserve time on the pressure pot? I don’t see it as a bookable resource on Skedda. Is it just so infrequently used that people can grab it as needed?

Also, the instructions explicitly call out resin as the intended use case but would it be permitted to use the pot to pressure-impregnate pieces with a finishing oil? (e.g. thinned tung oil) I’m thinking I’d partially fill an appropriately sized bucket with oil, submerge the pieces in there, and then leave them under pressure for some number of hours.

Hey Daniel! Thanks for reaching out.

It is generally infrequently used, so we’ve just left it as first-come-first-serve. I haven’t heard of that technique with tung oil, so my only concern would be any added safety risk and added mess. I wouldn’t imagine it to be a problem though? Curious if anyone else has done it and can weigh in.

All i’ll add is that for any oils / finishes / epoxy in the woodshop, be courteous to other members regarding smells and odors or non-smelling VOCs that would require other members to use a respirator.

If it doesn’t require that and you’re following safety protocals, then it is fine to use.

Thanks, Drew and Robert. Spill/mess-wise, I was thinking of putting my pieces in sections of 2” PVC pipe sealed at the bottom, with the pipes in turn being in a 5-gallon bucket. For thinning the tung oil, I had limonene in mind since the entire combination is supposed to be food-safe. Here’s the SDS for a 50/50 mix of tung oil and citrus oil: https://www.realmilkpaint.com/wp-content/uploads/SDS_RealMilkPaintCo_Half-Half_07-2023.pdf

Based on these guidelines I think it should be okay?
