When the Lagunas were installed, I activated my membership just so I could take the “free” class. I did a few test cuts on the Lagunas a few days later, and didn’t do anything else with that month’s sub.

When the metal shop update came out, I decided to skip the free training, and just wait until I have a situation where I need it and get retrained on it all.

FYI most classes do not require an active membership to attend. Not 100% sure about these classes since they are special but generally if you are interested in getting certified on a tool or taking a class, you do not need active memberships.

In general you’re correct; the exception has been the free or almost-free “recertification” classes offered to folks certified on an old machine when it’s replaced. The only instances I can think of have been big lasers (Red → Tarkin) and big CNC (Danny’s → Laguna) that were only offered to members.
