Home Tinkering SIG Recap - 9/16/2025

Howdy tinkerers! Here’s a link to the Google Drive folder for the last SIG. This has a doc with the meeting summary and the slides I showed during the meeting. It’s publicly accessible, so you can send anyone this link.

In the Meeting Summary doc, I added a link to the FriendlyElec website where you can get those little NanoPi computers, but pasting it here too for convenience:

Thanks for coming! Hope to see y’all at the next one on 10/21.

During this SIG there was a discussion about VPNs. One was recommended for keeping your info more private than most. What was that VPN provider?

The one I heard multiple people mention in that regard was Proton VPN. I personally haven’t used that – I use Mozilla VPN – so I looked up some info about Proton. Seems like people like Proton because they’re based out of Switzerland where privacy laws are very strict and have a policy of not logging your activity. Also they have a very usable free version. The downsides appear to be that they block BitTorrent traffic, and they only let you connect to the closest server, which means you’re unlikely to get around any restrictions based on your location since the server is probably in the same city or state as you. I can’t really vouch for the privacy of Mozilla VPN… All I know is that it’s $5 a month and lets you choose the location of the server, and it’s very fast. But I have no idea how they’d handle a copyright violation letter from a content owner, for example.

Here’s one example of a review I found about Proton:
