Thanks to everyone who attended Home Tinkering last night! That was fun motivation to do 22 more keystone jacks on the in-wall Ethernet cables we just ran at home. I’ll have some pictures to post on that transformation soon!
Here’s the Google Drive folder where I uploaded the meeting summary, and also the slides I showed with some background info on Ethernet cables:

Next meeting will be 6/16. Some ideas for topics that came up last night:
- Remote game streaming, i.e. gaming PC/console in a different room than the TV where you want to play. Classic case is “The PC with the best GPU is in the office/bedroom, but the best TV and couch are in the living room…” There are lots of bad ways to do this, so it would be fun to try figuring out some good ones!
- How to understand and deal with network traffic that uses Ethernet cable for interesting protocols besides normal networking, like whole-home (or at least multi-room) audio or video distribution. There are a lot of ways to go with this one, so maybe we could start by trying to demo using Dante. I’ll look into what hardware we’d need for this, because I’ve been itching to try it for a while.
See y’all in June! I’ll be out of town for the July meeting, so hopefully @jamesfreeman or one of our other regulars can host that one.
