Hollowing out a stump

I’d like to turn this stump into a seat which will involve hollowing it out. It’s about 2 feet tall. My fantasy of using the CNC and a comically large sized bit to do the job was dashed when I learned the gantry clearance is 7.5 inches and also when I mentally envisioned what would happen even if the gantry could even be raised high enough (wobble wobble).

Anyway, I figure there must be a better approach. I have an angle grinder with a bit designed for wood I’m going to try. Open to any other suggestions as well.

You can check out chain saw carving. There are chain saw carving tools from King Arthur that attach to angle grinders. Be safe and good luck

If you’re good with a chainsaw and finding a good center here is how easy it is. The bad, you would need a 14" bar chain saw. Not sure why you want to hollow it out if. is going to be a seat

What a smart way to hollow out a log!

I’m doing this for a friend of mine, and I mistranslated his goal a bit in my post. “Carve away a seat’s worth of wood” would have been a much better descriptor of what I’m interested in accomplishing than to have said, “hollow out.”

Using a chainsaw may still be the way to go. I’ve asked him to draw a sketch of his stump seat to be sure I’m understanding what he wants to achieve.

Thanks for replying! I’ll be back if his drawing leaves me “stumped” in any way.

Is this something that would be a candidate for the shaper origin?

The shaper origin can’t go very deep either.

If a chainsaw wheel is too intimidating, there are raspy carving wheels that are more forgiving, e.g. 4-1/2" Diameter - Extreme - Dish Wheels – Kutzall

Nice! I have a bit like that which is a real wood hog. I’m anxious to try it on the stump.

dunno…I haven’t used it yet

If you want to skip all the “fun”/work may i suggest

I’ll pass it along to my friend and see what he thinks about this metal butt holder. Looks to be about the right shape for him.

Be nice! Is a butt hugger! I learned to drive a stick on an old tractor that head a similar seat. They are a lot more comfortable than they look.

Add some springs under it and you’d be set.
