Hi all,
I am trying to drill a few holes in a 1/4” stainless steel plate much like I already did a few weeks ago successfully with the Grizzly. However yesterday I just failed and dulled 2 drill bits in the process not able to complete even just one hole. Unfortunately I don’t know why and am looking for help to get this done. I have some pictures of the bits, plate & settings I tried but am not sure how to attach them to this post. Your input is much appreciated. I will of course replace the drill bits.
Thanks
Stefan
Here is a helpful video for drilling stainless steel. Youtube
Stainless can be a pain sometimes.
What speed and what size drills were you using?
Stainless can work harden, and once you do that it’s trouble.
I would suggest using anchorlube for the lubricant. There is some by the lathe.
We can resharpen the drills if just the tip is dull. Leave them out for a steward.
Thanks that helps
I was using 1/4” bits and had the drill set at H 3
I’ll look for the lubricant, thanks
https://app.fswizard.com/ reccommends 321 RPM for a 1/4 drill in “Moderatly Difficult stainless steel”.
I’m not sure what RPM the H3 setting is, but it is probably way too fast.
You were correct Sir, RPM was too high. I was at around 1000 and 300 is recommend. I was able to get the holes drilled with no drama. Lots of patience still, but got it done. Thanks for the tip
