I made it out of 3 layers of 1/8" ply since I had a lot (and it’s cheap since I’m donating it). But I’m struggling to figure out how to hang it, since the only full layer is the backing and most hardware is thicker than that 1/8". It’s only like 1.5lbs, so I’m not too worried about strength.
I can cut an additional backing layer to give a screw more purchase if necessary, but I’m curious if there’s a better option.
I would probably use wood glue to attach some additional pieces that are thick enough to screw some hanging hardware onto.
Depending on how that plays out, maybe also some matching pieces near the bottom so it hangs flat (if it’s being hung on a wall) - but you can test for this after the hangers are added
How about glueing a french cleat on the back of each hand about 1/3 from the top. And then screwing the other cleat on the wall. If necessary glue another cleat-thickness piece at the bottom to make it lay flat against the wall.
Yeah, a French cleat would be my preferred method if it had a permanent home, but this will probably be moved around a bunch, so I’ll need some flexibility. I think adding material to the back is the most viable.
Depending on the Merch Tent and placement, you could also 3d print some fixtures for mounting if there is no easy place for french cleats… In either case though, you are probably looking at gluing supporting pieces to the back. You could also screw to the support pieces from the front, but then you would need to hide the screw head wth paint.
Picture hanging d rings will give a lot of flexibility for hanging it in a tent because they can suspend it from anywhere, and they don’t need very long screws so if you place them right (like at the finger tips where you have 2 layers) you probably won’t need to add additional layers.
Thanks y’all! I ended up adding a 1/4" strip to the back and used some D-ring picture hangers with 3/8" screws. In addition to providing some extra purchase, it also eliminated a bit of flex, so win/win!
