Some folks have been getting a little caviler with their glaze applications. To the point that I suspect that they have not taken the glaze class, and have no real insight or consideration to their application and the damage it can cause their work, the work of others and to our kilns. If a kiln operator judges your glaze work to be jeopardizing the batch, it will not be fired, and your name will be check against the roster of those that have actually taken the glaze class. If you have not taken the glaze class, your glaze work will not be fired. If I have to take the next step of checking if the owner of each work has or has not taken the class, the rate of return on EVERYONE’S work will slow significantly.
Friendly reminder we have a How To Glaze section on the Ceramics Wiki for anyone who may need guidance. If we need to expand this resource, I’d be happy to add more detail/requirements.
We got to talk about this off of discourse. When the shop was first getting set up, the glaze class was required. At the moment it is not.
That said, Seth, Perla, and Chase are all here to ensure things get fired well without damage to one artist’s piece or someone else’s. If they Jay, it is not safe or reasonable to fire a piece, they have good reason for it and will be happy to share details and a path forward. While it can be frustrating when your piece is not running through just yet, please approach it with an open mind and know that they are looking after your best interest!
Additionally, we have some other great folks around like Stanton, Rose, Julianne, Maxine, Natanael, Nona, and many more (forgive me for not name dropping everyone) who are happy to help guide you to the right resources and practices
Some notes around the glazing area with any rules or issues to avoid would help people remember what they need to do. I’m not sure what issues you’re actually seeing, but they can probably be addressed pretty easily that way.
I noticed we have a QR code right above the glaze station that might have some of this information. I have not scanned it myself , but if I were in the space that’s the first thing I would look at.
Have you or anyone else been able to scan that? If that doesn’t have the answers to what you are suggesting there, I think that would be a great place for it
People aren’t going to scan a QR code if they don’t know they should. Having a quick sign with “no glaze on the bottom” or whatever the issue that’s being had may be more effective to prevent any mishaps
If I recall, there is significant verbiage directly above the glazes offering up proper glaze techniques. I don’t know if there’s a more clear and concise way of illustrating that.
Notes are written there as well as a whole notebook of notes printed out next to the station.
Too many signs would be detrimental, so I really prefer to find a way to have a solid QR link available, and a printout near it would be some nice redundancy.
I think we also have a QR code that links to the How to Glaze section of the wiki at the glazing station, but I’d have to double check that.
