Fiber Laser Volunteering: Parts and Integration

Hey ASMBLY-ians(-ites?)

I wanted to put my hand up and offer some support for safety guarding the fiber laser once the expansion is under way. I have 10+ years experience in the industrial automation space, with specific experience in OSHA and RIA (robot stuff) compliance for safe operating tools.

The Hardware

It sounds like some variety of guarding is / has been / will be purchased to safe for backscatter. What may or may not have been purchased are:

  • An E-Stop (if one doesn’t exist outside the cell, which I would recommend)
  • A door interlock (couple ways to go here, Automation Direct has ample options to work with)
  • A momentary reset (push button to annunciate “hey, no one is in the cell make lasers pew pew pew”)
  • A safety relay or safety controlller (I believe I have one of these I can donate to the effort).

The Integration

For proper cell safety, you’ll want to have this hardware tied into the fiber laser’s safety circuit. TL;DR is:

  • Door is closed, laser is happy and will pew pew pew
  • Door is open, laser is sad and no pew pew pew
  • Door is closed but someone is inside, don’t press reset (there’s other options here, but dollars and how much safety is necessary for this)
  • Door is closed and no one is inside, press button it’s laser tiem.

The Offer

I can provide a safety relay (I believe I have 1 safety device input and a 4 safety device input style). I can also provide know how on getting the relay integrated.

Hit me up, happy to help.
