Hey y’all! Just got back from a trip and checked up on the turning area. Had a few tool concerns.
First one, one of our curved scrapers (Robert Sorby brand) appears to be missing. If anyone knows where it could’ve been put, please let me know. This is one of the more commonly used tools back there, especially for the bowl turners.
Secondly, ran into some wonky sharpening on a few tools. Overall want to put a system in place to limit this (clearly defined profiles for each tool. Looks like somebody has been taking a crack at changing the profiles on a few gouges, this isn’t conducive to a shared space)
The biggest concern was that someone completely blunted one of the skews. We have others in rotation, but this indicates a pretty serious (and potentially dangerous) misuse of this tool. Pictures are below. I assume someone either repeatedly mistook it for a parting tool, or intentionally tried to turn it into a scraper on the grinder? Just putting this out there in hopes that it doesn’t happen to other tools as well.
There is also some wear on the locking mechanisms of the tool rests that I’m going to look to address soon.
I’m going to attempt to address some of these concerns in the turning area in the coming weeks, but please let me know if you have any concerns/suggestions if you frequent the turning area! Turning has been a great way for me to decompress and I’d love to build more community back there and work together to keep it running smoothly. I mainly turn bowls, so I’m sure I won’t be aware of everything that could make the shop better for people who focus in other areas.
