Empty spools wanted!

The Bambu’s AMS haaates cardboard spools. We’ve been working around that by putting plastic rims on them, but that only works if the edge of the spool is pristine.

I’ve printed a respooler (and am now printing some ASA parts to replace the PLA parts that I’ve broken), which lets us transfer filament from one spool to another.

However, folks have been good citizens and have disposed of empty spools, so we don’t have a lot of plastic spools around.

If you empty a plastic spool and would like to donate it, please leave it next to the Bambu printer!

Hooray!

I’ve been holding onto a few since we spoke about this. I’ll bring them by today or tomorrow.

While searching for the specs, I came across this community sourced list of compatible spools: Bambu X1/AMS Community Spool List - Google Sheets

The specs are:

The AMS supports spools with a width of 50-68 mm and a diameter of 197-202 mm.

I’ve got quite a pile of empties, I’ll check them today and bring what I find!

OK, now I have to ask: how many do you actually want?

By my measurements, almost all of mine should work, in 3 categories:

  • 2x Giantarm/Geeetech spools, 197x58mm. Might be slightly small. Shows green in the sheet.
  • 7x Sunlu/Jayo/Tecbears spools, 200x~60mm. Shows green in the sheet.
  • 5x Tinmorry spools, 200x~58mm. Shows green in the sheet.

@aneel Do you want all 14? I am happy to donate them, if not they will become xmas light spools around new years time, whether my friends want them or not.

We have kind of a lot of steward filament spools that we’d like to convert. And we want enough around for members to use. I don’t expect people to transfer their filament back to cardboard when they’re done with the AMS, so I expect a bunch of these will end up on indefinite loan.

Great, I’ll bring them all and label them for AMS/respool use. I am planning to be by this afternoon.

Sadly, the respooler is not ready for use yet. I’m going to have to print the carriage in something stronger than PLA.
