Both Revo 12|16 wood lathe’s have very stripped threads in the lock handles that keep the quill (tail stock) stable. As such, when you attempt to tighten the quill against a spindle or workpiece, it is currently impossible to actually keep the quill locked. It’s possible to work with, but could lead to some frustrating, or even dangerous, operations.
I can reorder these from Laguna, but I know I can get them from somewhere else for cheaper and quicker if I can get the thread size and bolt size right.
Does anyone have any good techniques for accurately determining thread size and bolt size?
The parts manual only says “Lock Handle” and offers no clues to the sizes.
I believe one of those pictured was purchased by us as a replacement. I’ll look through the purchases to see, but there may be extra in the top left drawer. I can take a look this/tomorrow evening
Thread checkers sounds like exactly what I need. Do you know where exactly they live?
@drew.hynes yes I think one was a replacement. I haven’t checked the amazon history yet. I think we nailed it on this one on the first try, but I remember going through a couple of rounds on a different sized one. I’ll get schooled up and post what I find so we can make turnaround on this easier in the future
I can’t tell from the picture if it’s stripped or not, but if it is you can either buy an m6-1
steel insert thread which will be a good solution but is slightly harder/more expensive to do than just upsizing to m8-1.25. that is just cast-iron or cast steel not an issue to work with. the tools on hand to step up to the m8-1.25 are in the metal shop. M6-insert requires a special tap(I probably have one but need to look)
Either option is cheaper and easier to do than to replace the tail stock.
only possible issue with stepping up to the m8.125 is you might have to grind down the end of the bolt if it doesent fit in the keyway.
Knowing how I had to retap the tool rest made of the same material, I wouldn’t be surprised if the inside has stripped a bit. Still looks like there’s some thread in there though. I’ll see if I have a normal M6 bolt at home to try out in those slots before retapping.
@drew.hynes do you know when you’ll be able to check it out?
@EricP@JoeN I appreciate the insights here. This is definitely something I’m haven’t had much experience with and would love to see it happen so I know better in the future.
I’m fairly confident at least one of these is stripped, or mostly stripped. I found another m6 bolt and it slide through with just a little bit of force.
@JoeN is that a kit you have and could bring in sometime soon?
I was able to finish the other tailstock this morning. I tried to rehab the worse of the 2 lock bolts. It was too beat up and did not want to be thread chased. I threw it away. I assume the lock bolts should be arriving soon.
