Cutting soapstone on CNC

This is my first post. Hope it’s to the right category!!

I am interested in inlaying copper leaf shapes (0.020" thick copper) in soapstone tiles. The soapstone is very soft - a hardwood stick will scratch it. Do you think either Laguna CNC would work? Any down sides? I’ve already read that cutting the copper has been successful, so was wondering primarily about possible issues with cutting the soapstone. Plan is to epoxy the copper to the soapstone. Thanks!

I don’t know the thickness of the soapstone. I think your 1st issue is how you plan to hold it down. I don’t think cutting .02" is going to be hard depth. Sharp corners in the inlay is not easy. I wonder if it is possible to laser the soapstone down to .02". You could then be able to inlay sharp corners.

Is it going to produce a fine stone dust that could be hazardous to breathe?

Interesting! Thanks! I’ll ask!

Good question. It probably will. Anyone to ask about what particle size the vacuum set up catches?

Forgot. Soapstone thickness is 0.5" x 18" x 18". A copper leaf would ‘randomly’ be placed on about 10 of them, then tiles laid down in a room.

@jamesfreeman can make the call on if it’s ok. Usually stone dust is a no in the shop.
