I need to have paint made to match a custom color my client created in Photoshop. They gave me the CMYK numbers and the Pantone PMS number (no TPX though). Sherwin Williams is not able to make the paint based on that information. I’m still calling around, but does anyone have suggestions on where / how to get the paint made?
Would they be able to have a swatch printed at a print shop based on the CMYK then take that physical swatch to the paint shop? You can also just print on some decent cardstock yourself if you have a good printer, since all standard printers use CMYK.
Alternatively, this company looks like it can match PMS colors directly, but it would likely take awhile. Pantone PMS Colors Perfectly Matched in Paint
Edit: They actually say that 70% of orders ship within 48 hrs, so might be worth a shot.
Update in case someone else runs into this issue… it’s an annoying pain in the ___.
The paint stores I called cannot mix paint from CMYK. The Sherwin Williams guy asked what “CMYK” means - cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black). The best I could do with CMYK is print my own swatch on a good photo printer and they can scan the swatch optically and create something close. It won’t be exact, however.
To get the color to match exactly, I had to use the Pantone color number. The paint store can make it using a 6 digit code, however the client didn’t have that number. I tried creating a trial account with Pantone, but I would have to pay for a subscription to get the information.
I ended up finding a company online called My Perfect Color (the same place Matt linked to). They can make paint based on the Pantone number. It’s not cheap at $60 for a half-pint plus $20 shipping (Sherwin Williams would be $40 for a quart). The client wanted it to be exact and was willing to pay the extra.
