Crochet Needle Box

Finally finished up this box to fit crochet needles.

I made this on a lathe using many of the same techniques that I will be teaching in the vase class (next one is 22nd, still open spots).

You would officially call this a lidded box. It all came from the same piece of wood. I think it was Canary wood. It was a little bit lighter, however, I stained it with a homemade iron acetate concoction. Which is simply letting steel wool soak and dissolve in vinegar for a few days.

For the colors, I used oil-based paint markers. They seem to go on pretty well but when I was spraying lacquer on this, the paint started to run a little bit. Even after drying for a few days. In the future I might give water-based, paint, markers a try. On the other hand, I’ve also done some projects with acrylic based paint and finish and that combination seemed to work out very well. I’ll leave this on the display shelf for a little bit but ultimately it will go to my fiance. She’s from Colombia so the colors match that flag.

Before painting, I carved the details. I used the index feature of the lathe to help me draw some lines at specific intervals. Then I used a chisel to carve the details.

The black lines were burned in from an old guitar string.

I had some fun with this one and I like how it turned out. I especially like how well the lid fits on the box. The first day it had an extremely snug fit. The second day the wood moved a little bit so the fit was a little more loose. After letting it sit for a bit longer and putting finish on, the fit is perfect in my opinion.

Love seeing so many crafts in one project – turning, carving, painting. Oh, and some chemistry!
