Creator Pro printer

Hi everyone. So Valerie and Jon have kindly enlightened me on what the expectations are for hosting, for both hoster and hostee, and I had some things that I thought would be good to host and, well, weren’t. So those are off the table. But then I remembered that I actually do have something that might be good to host. I’m not promising right now, it’s just exploratory. Say no and it’ll be back to the status quo for me. Say yes and I’ll seriously consider it as an option.

I have a Creator Pro 3d printer. Retailed for about $1,000 or so. I’ve used it a few times, set up octoprint and a raspberry pi, found that I just can’t seem to get it to make something that’s actually decent, and gave up when my pi corrupted due to power loss and I just haven’t found the time to reinstall octoprint on it.

Any interest in my hosting it? At least then it’d get good use. Right now it’s taking up space in my office and I hate to see it go to waste. I’d put it in my coworking area, but not really enough room there either.

Again, since this is hosting, it’d be a big commitment for everyone involved, so I’m just asking about interest right now, not promising anything. I may yet even figure out how to get it into coworking, but space is very limited…

Thanks!

To be clear … the GlowForge is a laser engraver/cutter with a 40W CO2 air-cooled glass laser tube.

I will never understand why GlowForge chose to use the “3D Print” moniker for the tool. It simply isn’t one… although you can cut and stack cardboard to make a model … that’s hardly the common definition for the tool.

It’s a nice enough machine for what it is, especially the professional version that has a good air filter and passthrough capability.

It’s a 3d printer.

BUT I misremembered the name. It’s a FlashForge Creator Pro. I’ve corrected it in the post.

Single extruder or the Idex setup?

dual extruder.

Sir I don’t say this often but you have impeccable timing. I was just looking for one to put in the shop possibly. So yea we could have a use for it in the Print area. If you want to host it you have my support.

Haha, that’s awesome timing indeed! @Jon can help get a hosting agreement setup with you @duskglow.

Awesome. Let me fire it up and make sure it’s in good condition (I haven’t used it in a while, but it hasn’t seen a whole lot of use in general, so should be fine) and then we’ll chat.

Thanks.

Good news: works fine! Yay!

Bad news: My filament is brittle. Boo. Guess I’ve had it out for too long.

So one thing I did notice is that the right filament is having difficulty retracting. The motor’s running, but the filament isn’t moving. It’s feeding fine. It may be simply due to the (old) filament I was using, but not sure what’s going on there. Left is retracting fine.

I’ll poke at that and try to get it working before I move forward with hosting.

Edit: worked fine with another filament. Shrug. Guess it’s good.

@duskglow (et al) here’s the Wiki writeup of hosting I promised earlier, so you know what you could be getting into:

Got it. That seems reasonable. I’d have a few questions but mostly just related to training and maintenance schedule, as it’s a 3d printer there’s nothing out of the ordinary for a 3d printer required. I guess we can hash that out privately. I’ll be in touch.
