Hi there, is there any plan for the compact router to be replaced? I noticed it was red tagged
This is an integral part of my project, and I have seen lots of members use it so I was wondering if there is any plan.
Is this a palm router or plunge router that is red tagged?
It is the palm router assembly that is red tagged. “YO” won’t let me attach a picture or link otherwise I’d add a pic. The plunge router accessory seems to be functional, it would be pretty hard to break that I think.
There should be an upload button between the code block and the list. Yes please send a photo. I’m not sure what’s wrong with it. We get a large number of problem reports across the building but all of them don’t actually get reported. Not saying either is the case, but at the moment I’m having trouble seeing details on it.
Yup when I press that button it successfully uploads but won’t let me send. I didn’t inspect it to see what was wrong, but it was red tagged and it said broken. If you’re going to be in the shop today or tomorrow, It is on the bottom rack of the left tool shelf (assuming your back is to the garage door) near where the sanders are kept on the tool rack.
I think this link might work? It’s a link to the picture.
Link works! I know you didn’t write the tag… I don’t know what to do with the word “broken” at the moment. I may have some time to tinker with it this week. If anyone else seeing this has a moment to add some color or detail, that’d be helpful.
I won’t buy any new tools without at least some kind of checkup on it, but it doesn’t have to be from me. We have a lot of very talented volunteers, shop stewards, and curious members who have helped to see what issues might be and help me know if we need to order parts or simply scrap and replace.
The times I have been in Asmbly in the last few months, I noticed that tool being used every single time. I dont think it would hurt to have two. For $140 XR version I think is a good deal.
If anyone wants to try and trouble shoot it together, I’m available tomorrow morning and early afternoon
. I will keep you updated Rolo, but if you don’t hear from me, let me know if you get a chance to check it out.
Agreed with Jose, it’s pretty heavily used.
The problem report said it was seized up.
I checked it out this morning and it’s definitely frozen.
I’m going to resubmit a problem report with a short video
Thanks!
The DCW600 is not working and I believe should be replaced. Spindle doesn’t turn at all even manually, extremely difficult to disassemble (more than it should be), and it is from ATXHS days (guessing more than 5 years). I’m having trouble finding this exact replacement (or the DCW600b). The next comparable thing looks like this one: https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-20V-MAX-XR-Cordless-Brushless-Fixed-Base-Compact-Router-Tool-Only-DCW600B/305964582
It is $250. There is a corded version at about $170 at Woodcraft.

Onto our larger, corded DW618 with the plunge router base. The base is fine, and I got the router to turn on, however the dial is broken and the speed can’t be adjusted. I’m having trouble finding this exact part to order for replacement. It would be a shame to recycle this whole tool just because of that dial. If anyone with a 3D printer skill wants to give it a go, I’m happy to hold on to this for a bit in the gray stewards cabinet (by the office).
@Glory2God @Johnvaughn I know there’s some tool sales coming up in April. Let me know what y’all want to do.
You can find those routers new in box for cheaper on ebay or craigslist. E.g. https://austin.craigslist.org/tls/d/austin-dewalt-20v-max-xr-cordless/7902395161.html
Couldn’t you just superglue that speed dial?
Considering a few other plastic pieces I “really” made sure was super-glue secure all eventually broke anyways, I’m a little reluctant to try that. Maybe I’m a bit paranoid; I envision someone turning it just a bit too hard and then mildly panicking when they can’t turn it down.
I’ll see if I can create a model for it
@Rolo Amazon’s price for the same unit is $100 cheaper.
I’ve had a hard time with printed shafts like that breaking. One trick that I’ve recently figured out is using a screw as a reinforcement. I have just been printing the thread, not bothering with heat set inserts or anything. As an extra bonus, you can print the round part flat and the shaft flat as well, getting the better orientation for both.
