I’m a couple days late in posting this, but this was the state I found the Cold Saw in on Saturday evening, a mere three days after getting the saw back online with updated procedures:
Obviously someone made cuts without cleaning up at all. That would have been totally unacceptable before and is even worse now. The metal shop vacuum is practically underfoot in its standard location next to the Cold Saw. There’s just no excuse for this.
Then I went to use the saw the next day and found it clean but not returned to its straight configuration, as the updated procedure directs. It seems my cynicism in including “check that it’s in its straight configuration” at the beginning of the checklist despite having ”put the saw back in its straight configuration” at the end was justified. If someone else had used the saw without putting it back, then we would have been back to putting unnecessary strains on the blade.
Actually following the checklist and marking items off adds maybe 20 seconds to using the Cold Saw. It may seem silly, but we stewards are at wits end in trying to figure out how to disseminate updated information about proper machine usage. The alternative is mandating another “re-re-re-update class”, which is vastly more cumbersome.
The checklist is likely temporary, but until further notice, anyone not explicitly using the checklist may be temporarily banned from using the Cild Saw.
