CNC and Laser Fun

Hello all.

We’ll be gathering this Friday to enjoy the wonderful capabilities of our CNC and Laser machines. It’s that time of year, so we’ll be working on holiday decor and ornaments. Bring a project of your own, or just comewatch and converse with others. I’ll be trying out some Xmas trees, using the CNC 123 inlay technique. @michleon100 will lead the laser room projects and @SteveW will join me on the CNCs.

We’ll meet at Buddy’s burgers first to fuel up and discuss projects. Friday the 10th at 5:30pm, then Asmbly at 7:00pm. Then on to Asmbly for the fun.

This is a very low key event, and all skill and knowledge bases are welcome. It’s a great way to meet and interact with your fellow community members.

Hope to see you all there.

Looking forward to it!

If there is time, I want to prototype the board game otrio. Seems like a great cnc project and Christmas gift. I don’t know how to play, but a trusted coworker said it is fun, and that’s all the encouragement I need.

I will join at asmbly

The game looks interesting, and the board looks like it’s made to be made on the CNC!

I won’t be able to be there, unfortunately.

@Kasper That’s a perfect example of a project to bring.

That looks like tic-tac-toe on steroids! Im definitely going online to check this out—thank you Austin!

I’ll be there to enjoy the community time.

I won’t be there tomorrow

We had a great time last night. I believe everyone learned some new things, and we even tried out cutting fabric with a drag knife.

I created a wood inlay Xmas design with contrasting woods I randomly picked up at Fine lumber. Some design tweaks and and adding a hanging hole, amd maybe it’d be ready to sell.

Im attaching the 321 inlay instructions as requested. I still prefer this over VCarve, and @rjnevels might now as well.

There is interest in trying the drag knife on plastic sheeting, at @clayD has more details on that. @bwatt and @Kasper I’m not sure who brought it, but hopefully y’all wouldnt mind another trial.

It was great to see everyone there last night, and we’ll continue and expand these in the future.

Thanks to everyone’s guidance at this event, I was able to make an inlay coaster yesterday! I think I made just about every possible mistake I could along the way (forgot to mirror the plug design, entered the wrong depth values, selected the wrong toolpath on the machine, broke the bit that @jamesfreeman lent me……) but I learned a lot for the next one!

One issue in particular was tear out on the plug, leading to chipping, especially on sharp corners – any ideas on how to fix/debug that? I tried decreasing the depth of the cut, and it seemed to help a little.
