Cleaning painters tape residue from baltic birch

I’m generally trying to raise my wood finishing game, but also right now I have a specific project that (surprise!) I procrastinated on and now I need a quick solution so I can have this ready as an Xmas gift. :cowboy_hat_face:

My project is already laser cut and glued up – I did that months ago, then helpfully marked a couple reference lines with blue 3M painters tape. Fast forward to now and that tape adhesive “cured” onto the bare wood as my piece sat around neglected in our semi-climate-controlled side room. The tape itself came off, but it left behind a sticky residue that I’m concerned will interfere with an even application of stain.

TL;DR:

Any recommended cleaning solutions/techniques for painters tape residue that won’t damage the baltic birch wood for staining purposes? It’s not a heavy residue or anything, but definitely there.

My intent is to use a medium-brown gel stain, followed by a quick-dry semi-gloss poly clear coat.

I’ve read some online forums and such recommending an adhesive solvent like Goo Gone / Goof Off, or alternatively an alcohol (some folks even swear by hand sanitizer).

I’ll test if I can, of course, but time is short and I definitely hope I don’t need to cut and re-glue up another copy of this thing if I can avoid it.

Acohol, goo gone, acetone, sanding

All those should work
