Howdy Potters,
Grace (our new Lead Kiln Operator, intro post coming soon) and I met this week to discuss our firing offerings and changes to be implemented starting Monday, February 9, 2026. We think these changes will better serve the membership and encourage you to take a look and let us know if you have any questions!
Updated Firing Offerings
Cone 06 Bisque Firings
• Bisque firings will take place every Monday and Friday
• Firings will include extended candling and slower schedules to reduce the risk of bisque-related issues
Cone 04 Low-Fire Glaze Firings
• All low-fire glazed work should be placed on the “Low Fire Glaze” shelf
• Firings will occur once enough work has accumulated for a full kiln
Cone 6 Mid-Fire Glaze Firings
• Mid-fire firings will take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
• Moving forward, our standard mid-range firing is Cone 6
• All mid-range glazed work should be placed on the Mid Fire shelves
• We are eliminating separate shelving for commercial, house, and specialty glazes—these will now be fired together
Cone 10 High-Fire Glaze Firings
• All cone 10 glazed work should be placed on the “High Fire Glaze” shelf
• Firings will occur once enough work has accumulated for a full kiln
• Please note: All clay bodies, commercial glazes, and house glazes provided by Asmbly are rated for mid-fire only. Members participating in cone 10 firings must supply their own cone 10–rated clay and glazes
Kiln Ops Office Hours
Grace will be in the studio Saturdays from 10:00 AM–1:00 PM and available during that time to:
• Answer questions
• Address concerns
• Review work before firing
• Offer guidance on glaze or firing choices
We strongly encourage members to take advantage of these hours—Grace is an incredible resource and eager to connect with the community.
Simplified Kiln Shelving & Check-In
• New shelf labels will be installed—some locations may differ from what you’re used to
• We are simplifying shelving categories (no separation by glaze type)
Kiln slips will now require only:
• Your name
• Firing ID
Additional details (maker’s mark, house vs. commercial glaze) will be collected through the online firing form. While house and commercial-glazed work will be fired together, we’ll continue tracking house glazes to help improve and troubleshoot our glaze program.
Communication & Rejections
If a piece is rejected from firing, Kiln Ops will leave a physical note on the rejection shelf explaining why. If you have questions or concerns, you’re encouraged to:
• Email kilnops@asmbly.org, or
• Visit during Kiln Ops Office Hours to discuss in person
Thank you all for your patience and support as we make these changes. We’re excited for what’s ahead.
Happy Firing!
