Ceramics Classes are Live!

As of 8am this morning, we have the first round of Ceramics classes available for registration! As a reminder, you do not need to be a member to join for classes. Come get your hands dirty, we think you will love it!

Currently Available Classes:

Ceramics Studio Introduction (CSI) - Free
This is an introductory ceramics orientation and safety course designed to familiarize members with the studio’s policies, layout, and available equipment. The primary focus of this class is understanding the rules and procedures to ensure a safe and productive experience for all users. All necessary materials are provided. Note that attendance in a CSI session is required for all ceramics members before using the studio.

Beginner Wheel Throwing
Try your hand at wheel throwing! In this beginner-friendly class, you’ll learn how to center clay, pull walls, and shape your piece on the wheel. Get plenty of hands-on guidance and support as you explore the basics of throwing. At the end of class, choose your favorite piece to keep! Your instructor will trim and bisque-fire it for you, and you can return to glaze it yourself during one of our Glazing Workshops, or opt to have it glazed for you for a small additional fee.

Beginner Hand Building: Slabs
In this beginner-friendly class, students will explore the fundamentals of slab building, a versatile handbuilding technique. Participants will learn how to roll, cut, and shape clay slabs to create functional or decorative pieces of their own design. The class will also cover essential skills such as moisture control, slipping, and scoring. This hands-on session is perfect for those new to ceramics and focuses on creativity, craftsmanship, and building confidence with clay. Your instructor will trim and bisque-fire your final piece, and you can return to glaze it yourself during one of our Glazing Workshops, or opt to have it glazed by an instructor for a small additional fee.

Beginner Hand Building: Pinch and Coil
In this beginner-friendly class, students will dive into the most ancient ceramics technique: pinching and coiling. Participants will learn how to shape clay using the pinch method to form small vessels and apply coil-building techniques to create larger, more intricate forms. The class will also cover essential concepts like moisture control, slipping, and scoring. This hands-on session encourages creativity while building confidence with clay. Your instructor will trim and bisque-fire your final piece, and you can return to glaze it yourself during one of our Glazing Workshops, or opt to have it glazed by an instructor for a small additional fee.

Slab Building: Make a Spoon Rest/Trinket Dish
Learn to create beautiful and functional small dishes like spoon rests or trinket dishes using slab-building techniques. In this beginner-friendly class, you’ll be introduced to the slab roller, texture tools, and formers to help shape and personalize your work. You’ll also get an overview of advanced tools like 3D printers and CNC machines to spark ideas for future projects. All materials and tools are provided. Your instructor will trim and bisque-fire your finished piece, and you can return to glaze it yourself during one of our Glazing Workshops or choose to have it glazed by the instructor for a small additional fee.

Hey, hey! I’m a complete newbie to Asmbly. I was wondering for a ceramics membership - do I need to do both the regular orientation and the ceramics orientation or just the ceramics?

Thanks!

Lisa

Hey Lisa,

Welcome to Asmbly! To use the ceramics shop, you’ll need to complete both the regular orientation (required for all prospective members) and the Ceramics Studio Introduction class (required for ceramic members wanting to utilize the ceramics shop). You may take them in any order you prefer!

Best, Natanael
