C channels for tabletops...?

Hey gang. I’m looking into building or possibly buying a hardwood tabletop for a desk, so the size I’m talking about will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 x 60, probably 1.5" thick.

I’m unsure if I want to go butcher block style, edge glue boards, or possibly go with a slab of some sort.

At what point, or under what circumstances do I want to look into installing c channels into a project like this?

I wouldn’t use c-channel unless it’s how I was mounting the table legs.

1.5” table tops are pretty stable in an indoor setting. It will move a little over the seasons, but you’re not going to experience dramatic cupping or twisting (if the glue up was done right and the material was milled after it’s all dry).

The C-Channel isn’t all that effective at preventing cupping anyhow.

This bench is 1.25” thick, fastened to the base with a few screws. It’s not cupping or twisting at all. 18” deep, 60” long

Cool, thanks for the input.

When you say “the material was milled after it’s all dry”, you mean the initial milling, right? Not, say, planing it after the glue up…?

The wood needs to be dried and then it is cut and milled to dimension so it doesn’t warp.
