August CNC SIG Recap - 8/4/24

All,

Here is the August CNC Special Interest Group (SIG) Recap (the recorded Zoom meeting is linked at the end).

  1. Ethan’s Hold Down Techniques: @mgmoore shared some hold-down techniques he’s been working on for the Laguna Swift in our shop. We’re looking forward to seeing how these will be applied to larger stock. This method keeps the material intact without the need for glue or fiber nails.

  1. Michael’s Burning Man Bike Rack: shared the bike rack he’s creating for Burning Man. With the event being so large, bikes are essential for efficient travel, and Michael generously provides a place to park them!

  1. Michael’s Coasters: Michael made coasters just two weeks after learning how to operate the CNC! He also mentioned that after learning so much from these SIGs, it’s becoming more and more expensive, haha. Hopefully, we’re helping him allocate his money wisely.

  1. Steve’s Home CNC Machine: Before introducing his home machine, @SteveW promptly reminded us he’s a beginner. I like the humility, but, let’s be real lol. He then shared with us his home CNC machine made from MDF and using Jay’s Custom Creations vector files (only a $20 value!).

It was always great seeing @TravisGood, Steve Krueger, and @jamesfreeman on Zoom, even though James was smiling at us from a beachside view.

Next month’s meeting is on Sunday, September 1st at 9 AM in the multipurpose (MPR) room to prepare for the Maker Market. The theme is bring something to share and build your portfolio for this exciting once-in-lifetime (or at maybe once a year?) event! The Maker Market is coming up in November, and we want to crush it before it arrives. Share what you’re developing and inspire us to craft wonders beyond anything we could have dreamed! Impress us, and yourself.

If you need direction, think holiday-themed.

See you guys next month!
