Are you a frame maker?

Hello!

I am looking to make my first frame or possibly commission someone to make it (roughly ~35” x 50” - It’s for an oddly dimensioned print). I’m also willing to pay someone to shepherd me through the process and help me make it. I can use all the tools in the woodshop, I’ve just never made a frame before.

If you make frames, where did you start? Do you buy premade sticks with the indent already present for the art? If so, what’s your preferred vendor?

Hey Molly! I’ve made a number of basic frames at Asmbly. I am by no means an expert per se, but if you’re looking for guidance (or assistance) with something simple, feel free to send me a message!

I’m also looking to make some frames with leftover red oak I have. If you’re interested, I’d love to get in on the instruction and collaboration too.

I did custom framing in my teens and 20s; 35”x50” is large for a wooden frame. I hope you’re not using glass; even plexiglass might be too heavy for a frame that size.

if you’re planning to use a clear front like plexiglass, I recommend building a frame with cross braces in the back that supports the weight. The mounding surrounding the art at that size shouldn’t be supporting weight, in my experience.

I recounted the measurements by memory; it was actually 27 x 41”. I’m resolving to buy a frame and pausing the frame-making journey for now. I priced out some non-glare acrylic, and it was more than I wanted to pay right now (like $130).

Frame acrylic is the biggest expense when it comes to frame making, unfortunately
