Are there any local stores you recommend for hardware/materials?

Hey y’all! I had to pick up an allen key from ace hardware today to assemble a desk I just acquired (thank you, Stephanie!!). I ended up going to Ace Hardware to pick up, but it had me thinking, what alternatives are there to big brand hardware stores in Austin, Texas?

Moving into 2025, I’d like to be much more intentional with supporting local businesses and organizations in my community (for many reasons), and I was wondering if you have any recommendations for Austin-local stores where you can pick up hardware, materials, tools, and anything you would otherwise get at Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, etc?

I am all for Breed and Company. They carry a better hardware selection (bolts and nuts). I also like American Bolt.

I like Sparktech for my metal machining bits. I have used Dixie Tool Crib. I don’t live south so I frequent Sparktech more.

My neighborhood used to have exactly the thing you are looking for, but the owners retired a few years ago and now the space is a dental practice :sob:

FWIW, Ace Hardware usually is the local option. It’s a pretty laissez-fair franchise that helps a lot with purchasing logistics. Breed & Co is an Ace affiliate, for example.
