April CNC Recap - 4/6 & Next Meeting THIS SUNDAY, May 4th @ 12:30pm

All,

This is the recap of the April 2025 CNC Special Interest Group (SIG). Here’s what we discussed (Zoom link of recorded session is at the bottom of this message):

  1. Taylor has been making significant progress on his marble board game that he plays with his grandmother.

  1. Brian made this incredible, ultra-fine cut into wood. This was a laser cut but it was interesting to see. It also brought us into the idea of making custom cutting boards like those at broinwood.com. This website can help give you some ideas of what type of cutting boards people are interested in.

  1. Michael shared with us that we’re going to have (and may even have now) a true 4-axis CNC machine. That will allow us to make things like wood chess pieces, table legs, and anything else your mind can imagine!

  1. Austin made a nice-looking tiny bench after recently learning CNC. This was his first CNC project–very impressive!

  1. Ted shared with us his finalized hydrofoil project. Months of hard work have paid off!

  1. I couldn’t find a picture I had of my project, Oscillation Station, so I grabbed a still of it in operation. The ironic thing is that I didn’t use the CNC, but I thought I was going to need it. We’ll talk about it more this Sunday, but the project went extremely well!

We also want to make sure that everyone has access to the new instructions for the Laguna workflow (since we have a new controller). The instructions are here: Laguna CNC Workflow (Swift) BDW-1.pdf - Google Drive

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone this Sunday at 12:30pm at Asmbly for the May CNC SIG on May 4th. Remember, this is a time where we can share CNC ideas and bounce things off each other to figure out the best way to design or build our projects. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

It was fun to listen to but hard to watch because images were so small and many projects weren’t shown to us on Zoom. I realize it’s an extra effort to video capture featured projects in full screen so I understand why they’re not shown. Just know that when the effort is made, viewing the recording is much more interesting and if done in real time then it becomes something we on Zoom can comment on.

Again, just being able to listen in on the SIG after the fact is appreciated. Thanks!

I’m sorry that I’ll be missing our May CNC SIG. Catch you all next month.
