Approved Clay Bodies

These clay bodies are now on the “approved” list. Note that these are “mid-fire” clays. The low fire clays bisque the same, but we will need to be informed for the glazing. We just did our first low fire glaze test and it is spectacular!

So shipping to Austin just about doubles the price but I got some ‘Iceman with Grog ^5-6’ for turning large pots. Same bisque fire but special glaze firing so the whole kiln would have to be filled with only mid-fire clays, correct?
Sounds like a challenge.

Anything mid fire will glaze at our normal cone of 5. We have been experimenting with low fire glaze runs (cone 04) with some amazing results using underglazes and Jungle Gems. Some of the work was made with a low fire clay. That was clearly designated to the team and we were keen to fire it. We use the Skutt Kiln (Helios) to fire odd thing. It’s a smaller kiln, so we can fill it faster. We also have a designated shelf for low fire glaze. That would be the bottom shelf. This may change around as we adjust. For now I will suggest the same for low fire bisque-ware. And for people to consult with us personally if possible or communicate on their slip descriptively if it is a clay body that is low fire or one that has not yet been approved. And I am unlikely to fire an unapproved clay without a personal discussion. As for a challenge, I’m all for it. If we can be all singing, all dancing…
