Anydody know what happenned to the Scroll saw?

I havn’t been able to come to asembly in a while and was able to spend some time on Monday. I noticed the scroll saw was removed. I do like to use the scroll saw for some applications. The half inch blade on the band saw makes some cuts difficult. I know it just sat in the corner catching dust and I did ressurect it and tuned it up and left extra blades. Is it going to be replaced or was it just in the way?

We have two miscellaneous scroll saws in the shop; they got moved around when the small CNC got replaced, but neither was dispositioned (one’s actually hosted; I think it’s Danny’s). As for where they actually landed, I’m not sure. We do need a better solution for occasionally-used benchtop tools.

We’ve kicked around the notion of getting a couple nicer scroll saws and doing classes, but that’s in limbo until an instructor turns up.

I would throw the mortiser in the category of occasionally used bench-top tools worth keeping. It seems to have found an OK spot on the old small CNC cabinet by the bathroom, and Bob Levine has kept in good shape. It could possibly share that surface with a scroll saw. (There’s an odd sander of unknown provenance sitting there now.)

Yes, I think the mortiser is the kind of handy but occasional-use tool we should keep around. That old green combo sander was replaced with the Wen but hasn’t managed to go away yet. I was thinking of just blowing the dust off and putting it on the up-for-grabs shelf.

Haha, related note – @torchedguitar was just doing some “would have been way easier on a mortiser but don’t know how to use one” work this weekend. He did a really nice job with it, but it made us realize we should learn how to use that mortiser :joy:

Just the other day I had Bob Levine explain the basics. It doesn’t seem hard; to a first approximation, it’s a small drill press.

That is an impressively square hole for a hand router.

He did a combo of tabletop drill press to hog out most the material, then chisel to make square, then router to flatten the bottom. Making a lift for this plant shelf to frame the window better and get more shelves with good light.

I have seen it tucked away in a corner but can’t remember where. Not sure if you’re aware but the 14" bandsaw(smaller one) can be easilly fitted with a 1/4" or 1/8" blade that can handle smaller radii. However, it would require for you to learn (assuming you don’t) how to switch and properly track the blades. Off course would also require for you to purchase and carry your own blades. For me changing the blade and tracking it properly is a less than a ten minute job. The 1/8" blade can be tricky to tension and use depending on the quality of the blade.

I will look for the scroll saw this saturday during maintenance day. I also have one I can host if the other two are gone.
