Believe it or not, the ceramics space at Asmbly is the space with the highest potential to harm yourself & others by not cleaning up after yourself. Take a look at the effects of silicosis, and the OSHA requirements for testing of folks that work in studios for silicosis. (it’s a full pulmonary work up every 30 days if you don’t feel like clicking the link)
Yesterday, upon arriving at the studio to teach a wheel throwing class, I found it to be a huge mess. It wasn’t this bad when I was here on Friday.
Multiple layers of dried clay on the floor surrounding wheels, dried clay on the doors, dry clay sitting on wheel heads and under drip trays from trimming, dried clay stuck to bats, etc.
I double checked the cameras between Friday the 4th, and yesterday the 8th when I taught. During this time, only two members even touched the mop in the studio.
Because of this, it took an hour and a half past my scheduled class time for me to get the studio into a shape I wouldn’t be ashamed to leave it in.
Please ensure you are booking enough time to clean up the entirety of the area you work in, including mopping the floor. Asmbly is a volunteer run space, and it’s not someone’s job to clean up after you.
