Aluminum Can Recycling

Hello!

I’d like to be better about sending recyclable materials to the right place. In our dumpster area, there’s a dumpster specifically for recycling. The big grey Balcones Recycling dumpster. Please consider tossing appropriate items in there.

It is good for Paper, Aluminum / Tin, Glass, and Plastic Bottles.

Things to NOT recycle:
Plastic Bags, seriously, it can get rejected or trigger a fine.
No used glue paper. Clean paper only.
No empty glue bottles or other chemical bottles. It’s meant more for soda or water bottles.

Inside of the MPR, you’ll find a blue bin with a recycling logo on the front. Please use that to toss your empty soda cans or other aluminum cans only. If you find this full, please toss it in the recycling dumpster. I’ll get us another bin for recycling other materials.

Alright now let’s talk about fun stuff and things I’d like to do but don’t always have the time for. If anyone is interested in helping with one or more of these, please let me know!

  • A “lid” to put over the bin that allows cans only. There used to be one from cardboard, but it disappeared.
  • An even better upgrade: A can crusher lid. Something to cover it and crush cans to help save space.

@tomthm has offered to pick up a bag of cans to take to a recycling center. This could give us a little bit of change back and help fund that soda machine.

This bin in the MPR is only for aluminum cans?

Not my call, but I think it should be aluminum cans only. Prevent having to sort recycling when redeeming aluminum.

@Iammikecohen correct. @Rolo mentioned in his message that another bin for recycling other types of materials will be added so we’ve got a collection point for other recyclables. Aluminum is being cashed in, so keeping it separate eliminates the sorting work.

I will add that aluminum cans should go in that bin in the MPR, not the aluminum swarf buckets.

@Iammikecohen correct!
Please use the blue bin in the MPR for aluminum cans only.

And to Ethan’s point, cans should only be recycled here and not in the metal shop. That said, Ethan, we could probably recycle a whole bin of aluminum scrap whenever the aluminum cans go if that’s something you’re interested in.
