All of the Prusa i3 mk3s+ printers (Apollo, Hermes, and Sunwukong) have now been upgraded to the E3D Revo hotend, from the stock E3D V6 hotend. Hermes and Sunwukong were upgraded Sept 5th, and Apollo on Sept. 27th. All Revo are equipped with hardened Obxidian nozzles- feel free to print CF, GF, Glow-in-the-dark, and other abrasive filaments!
The Revo is a newer hotend design that combines the heatbreak and the nozzle in a single, factory-sealed piece. This means we should completely avoid having “Blobs of doom” that occur when the heatbreak and nozzle are not perfectly sealed (after replacing/re-seating the nozzle). It also makes it much easier to change the nozzles out for maintenance: at the moment, we do not have different-sized Revo nozzles or allow changing nozzles out for bigger/smaller-diameter nozzles, so please do not do this yourself. In addition, the heater block much smaller and covered in a silicone covering, which should reduce the possibility of filament getting stuck to the block and dragging around, causing it’s own form of a “blog of doom”. tl;dr: much less blobs of doom, much more reliability
Sunwukong and Hermes were upgraded a month ago and seem to be running very smoothly. Apollo was upgraded yesterday and it seems to have clogged due to a slight error during the upgrade- I came in today and I believe I’ve figured out the cause of the clog and remedied it.
You may noticed the printers will ask for a firmware upgrade- please ignore the firmware upgrade warning- we had to actually downgrade the firmware to get the Revo working due to a change in how it checks if it is heating up properly. There is a Revo-compatible version of the new firmware, but it did not seem to work properly, so we had to go down to version 3.12 in the meantime.
Is there an E3D V6 left over that I could acquire? I run a Wham Bam Mutant V2 carriage and swap out hot ends, I could use another V6 for high temp material.
Sorry for the late reply- we just discussed this at a 3DP stewards meeting and we’re happy to give away the old V6’s- are you still interested in this?
Amazing. I just ordered a Revo hotend for my personal MK3s+, and was going to post my gory blob pictures from this weekend. Happy to have my decision validated here as well.
Extra thanks for the firmware tip - you probably just saved me a couple hours troubleshooting when my hotend arrives this week!
Hope you love it as much as I do! Has to be my 2nd favorite 3DP mod only behind adding auto-leveling (back when printers didn’t come with that by default )
I forgot to mention, and edited the original post, all Revos have Obxidian abrasives-friendly nozzles, so feel free to print carbon fiber, glass fiber, glow-in-the-dark, and other abrasive filaments.
