Adding my forge to the metal shop?

Hey y’all! I know several people have tools that they keep at ASMBLY for community use and I was wondering what the process is like for doing that (if there is a process). My brother is a hobby blacksmith and has a forge that he’s looking for a home for. Due to a big move, he no long has a place to use his forge and anvil and said he’d be interested in keeping it at ASMBLY for others and himself to use if that’s possible. What do y’all think?

+1 , Unfortunately I think our lease prohibits it : (
I stand corrected. Nice : )

Our lease doesn’t prohibit any equipment. We had a fire code problem allowing open flames around sawdust, but the new metal shop is good to go.

You can find details of the hosting process on the wiki. If your brother is interested in hosting, the first step would be to talking to the metal shop leads @mgmoore and @SavHarvey to see if the tool fits into their plans and space can be made available.

We’ve had a few people approach us about hosting various machines. I’d love to have all of them. And I don’t want to miss an opportunity or dampen anyone’s enthusiasm.

But right now any such decisions have to be placed on hold until the metal shop layout is finished. Until then, I simply don’t know if we can fit anything else. That means we need to build the fiber laser enclosure, figure out the internal layout of the laser welder room (which will also hold several other tools), fix and upgrade all the bending tools, and sort out the layout of the storage area and find places for a couple of still homeless tools.

Unfortunately, I suspect we won’t have room for anything additional at that point. But I cannot be certain yet.

Sweet, thanks for the link!

Ok gotcha. That all makes sense. If you’d ever like a hand building that enclosure or maintenancing tools, I’d love to help! I’m not very good about just showing up to volunteer but when there’s a specific task that needs doing, I love to help

If we have a forge on site,I have enough kit and experience to run a class for 4 people. It’s also not a bad idea to make a rolling cart with an extension for supporting stock for the forge. Then the whole operation can move out into the parking lot. You really, really want some elbow room for that kind of work.

That would be super sick! Hopefully we’ll eventually have a spot for it

Did you go to the recent metal shop volunteer day? Ethan is using those days to give folks detailed information on how to maintain specific metal shop equipment. You should mark your calendar for the next one!
