A better door opener

I’ve been a member for about 10 years, and I finally figured out a good way to get into the front door while carrying an armful of bulky materials:

  • Physical Key Fob purchased on neon
  • old apple watch wristband
  • 3d printed doohickey that combines those two

There may be better ways to hold an RFID fob on your wrist, this is what worked for me and my scrap pile.

So… something I found out is that if you simply wave your hand in front of the readers (or lightly and I mean lightly tap on them), and your phone is on in your pocket, it will unlock.

Caveat to that is you have to have the correct location settings enabled on your phone.

It works!

I vaguely remember trying this unsuccessfully a couple years ago, which motivated me to buy the fob. I have a different phone now, maybe worth another try.

Yup, this is the one that stops this working for most folks.

Needs precise, always on location allowed, and low power Bluetooth always allowed.

This is clever @alan, I like it!

I have found the hand wave with phone in pocket thing mostly works, however person meat seems to be a problem, so I’m often doing a little hip turn to make it work for me (phone in back pocket). Also sometimes my phone gets fussy about being unlocked in order to comply.

I’d enjoy having this wrist watch alternative. @alan did you design the holder doohickey 3DP file or find something somewhere? Is that something you’d be willing to share or sell prints of? :awesome:

I designed it, I’m happy to share it, here’s the STL I printed. I know there are a few different sizes of apple watch wristband interface, I designed this for the one I have, which is about 35mm wide. I’m not sure how those sizes are normally identified.
