When I turned on Dorian today and hit ‘home’ it ran to the back right corner and started banging against the right side making a load noise. Turning off main power and hitting E-stop did not stop the banging but it eventually stopped on its own. After that it seemed to have normal motion but wouldn’t cut so I checked the alignment and it was way off. I did a crude adjustment of the mirror on the left after which I was able to complete my cuts but someone who knows more than I do should check out this machine.
Please do not ever try to touch the lenses in any of our lasers.
If the machine is not working, place a red tag on it and wait for a steward to get to the machine.
Attempting to use the laser with misaligned mirrors, and making a “crude adjustment” of them likely has damaged the optics beyond repair and they’ll need to be replaced. You should not be taking our machines apart if you aren’t a volunteer within the space.
Unfortunately, while I would’ve been able to solve this issue previously, I cannot now that the lenses are damaged and we’ll need to wait a week+ for the member that handles in-depth laser maintenance to return to town.
I did not touch any lenses and I’m pretty sure the optics are not damaged beyond repair. I think you will find the alignment is good. I shouldn’t have used the phrase ‘ crude adjustment’. I am familiar with the optics but wasn’t aware that I wasn’t authorized to touch it. I think the main problem is with the limit switch.
I will say, I was pleasantly surprised with how well the optics were aligned today after you took a look at them. Thank you.
The limit switch issue is a known problem with the rotary mode on the laser, sometimes its status needs to be reset. We need to further document this somewhere.
Also fixed the power switch issue you ran into as well.
